September: Four Classes, Two Lessons
On Tuesdays during September we'll do a lesson the first week and do it again on the third Tuesday. We'll do a different lesson on the second Tuesday and do that one again on the last Tuesday. You’ll have a chance to experience what it’s like to return to the same lesson after a couple of weeks’ hiatus to see how your movement habits and abilities can improve even without returning to those same movements during the intervening time.
The two lessons will relate to one another. The first and third Tuesday’s we’ll do one of my favorite lessons that involves learning to move from the floor to sitting in an unconventional fashion. This is a movement that nearly everyone “gets” the first time through but it’s also a movement that can be made simpler and less effortful with a second approximation.
For the second and fourth Tuesday’s we’ll do a lesson in a chair that explores some of the same movements that are utilized in the other Tuesday class, but because of the different orientation (sitting in a chair), the movements feel very different. This lesson also allows for many unique ways to explore the nearly infinite variety of possible movements one can make with the spine, ribs and torso.
We often say that when doing Feldenkrais work, "It's not about the movement." Find out what it IS about in these September classes.
September: The Process of Improvement
During our four September Friday classes, we'll explore a complex, detailed movement that we’ll finally do in its entirety only during the last class of the month, on September 24. For the three classes that lead up to that, we’ll explore improving all the skills that will help to make the ending movement possible, hopefully, easily possible.
We’ll work through training these various components of the ending movement a little bit at a time, building on similar ideas each week so you can really experience progress through a process of building ability piece by piece. By the end of the month, many of you will find yourself performing a movement that you might have thought impossible at the beginning. It should be fun!
It's not absolutely essential that you attend all four Friday classes, but you'll have the best experience of the entire series if you do them all!
Fundamentals: This class is always FREE
If you're new to Feldenkrais, this is the class to begin with. Mark gears each Saturday class toward illuminating a particular aspect or two of how and why the Method works. Mark will also speak more during the class about the specific way or ways each lesson is designed to improve your efficiency in movement. A brief Q & A period follows each class.
In his article, "Learn to Learn," Dr. Feldenkrais offers instructions for how, and some of the reasoning behind why, we ask you to pay attention in very specific ways during ATM class.
The following are service marks or certification marks of the Feldenkrais Guild of North America: Feldenkrais®, Feldenkrais Method®, Functional Integration®, Awareness Through Movement®, ATM®, FI®, and Guild Certified Feldenkrais PractitionerCM.
