I started professional life as an actor, primarily in the theater. Before I realized my chosen profession was likely chosen for the wrong reasons, I became a theater director and, for a few years, I was the artistic director of a small theater.
I became a Feldenkrais practitioner when I was 47 years old and I’m now in my 20th year of practice. Calculating as best I can I’ve given over 15,000 individual Feldenkrais sessions, taught over 2,000 Awareness Through Movement classes and given over a hundred multi-hour Feldenkrais workshops.
Over the years, I’ve continued to study human function through many different lenses. I’ve learned a great deal more through my experience with the thousands of clients with whom I’ve worked. I am convinced and become more so every day that improvement attained through the Feldenkrais Method is more pleasant to achieve, brings about more global, more lasting, more wide-reaching changes and is just as, if not more effective, than nearly all more generally accepted methods of rehabilitation, recovery or physical skill enhancement. The reason is simple. Those of us who practice the Feldenkrais Method are always focused on helping to improve the person we work with, not just that person’s symptoms or injury or condition. That mindset and the shifts that it brings to our methodology are what make the Feldenkrais Method work better than a lot of other things you might have tried.
When the pandemic began to change our daily lives in late winter 2020, I thought my career would come to a temporary halt. The halt lasted only a week and I and many of my colleagues began to explore working with people both in groups and individually via online video communication. I was very surprised to find that working that way could be just as effective as working with people directly with my hands. It’s a different experience, to be sure, more like an individual Awareness Through Movement class might be, but it is highly effective, and each individual session is unique, very specifically tailored to my client’s desires and needs as they continue to manifest and evolve on any given day over the course of the hour we spend together. Some of my clients have improved more and more quickly working remotely than they did when they were coming to the office for hands-on sessions.
I live in New Paltz, NY, about 80 miles north of New York City. My hands-on practice is in New Paltz and once each month I see clients in Manhattan. All my group classes and the majority of my individual sessions are currently delivered via Zoom. The great thing about that is that there are no boundaries created by not being in the same physical location.
Thanks for taking the time to read. I hope to meet you or see you again soon!
