All the time, the nature of pain and how and why it is produced is becoming better understood. There's much more to pain than just a simple response to tissue damage. Pain changes your nervous system in a number of ways that become more and more difficult to overcome, the longer pain remains. Even after the damage or injury heals, pain can persist because of these changes in the nervous system.
