Ongoing: Easing Into Comfort
My intent on Tuesday is to bring you lessons that will be most likely to leave you with the experience of having had a noticeably pleasant "state-change." Nearly any Feldenkrais lesson is likely to do this, but these lessons change your state though easy, simple, very comfortable movement patterns. We frequently suggest during all lessons that you, “Just do what’s easy,” or “Only do the movement while it remains comfortable.” For each Tuesday class, I’ll continue to do my best to bring you lessons that encourage you to explore at that easy level, yet still have the same power of transformation you find with all lessons.
While putting together lessons for this series over the past several months, I've been reminded over and over of how spot-on, "less is more," can really feel. Come explore these delicious movements that will accrue in a way that makes you happy to be a human!
Toes, Feet, Ankles (Knees & Hips??)
Through the end of September, we're working with lessons that organize around the most distal parts of the human body, the feet, toes and ankles. Many of us treat our feet pretty poorly. At the very least, most of us take our feet for granted—until something goes wrong, of course. There are twenty-six bones in the foot and toes which means there are more points of articulation (joints) in the space defined by our foot than in any other part of our body that takes up the same amount of area. Also, there are more individual muscles, tendons and ligaments in those two feet than any other part of oneself of similar size. And we end up sending more than our body weight through our hard-working feet, or even just one of them, when we run, or jump or play sports.
All those bones and muscles and the rest of the fascia that makes up a foot, ideally form a flexible but incredibly strong supportive network that is also able to generate power and absorb shock. When functioning optimally, your foot has more load-handling ability than any other part of your body. But with all those potentially moving parts that are intrinsically connected through both structure and function, there are a lot of things that can go wrong.
I invite you to explore finding a clearer path for your feet to experience improvement in comfort, capability and stamina. We’ll do lessons that work directly with the foot and toes and others that focus on improving the function of your feet and ankles by exploring how the organization of everything above your ankles can improve the function of your feet. All the while, you’ll be doing Feldenkrais so you know you’ll finish a lesson feeling improvement not just in your feet but in your feet as a part of your entire self!
Free Fundamentals or
Feldenkrais / Mindfulness
Generally, on the last Saturday of the month, I teach a Feldenkrais fundamentals class. This class takes place just once per month and is offered free of charge. If you are new to the Feldenkrais Method, this is the class to try out.
Generally, on the first and third Saturdays of each month (but not always so check the calendar you'll find by clicking the green button below), I teach a special 90-minute Feldenkrais / Mindfulness class where we explore the synergies of mindfulness practice and the Feldenkrais Method.
In his article, "Learn to Learn," Dr. Feldenkrais offers instructions for how, and some of the reasoning behind why, we ask you to pay attention in very specific ways during ATM class.
