Ongoing: Easing Into Comfort
My intent on Tuesday is to bring you lessons that will be most likely to leave you with the experience of having had a noticeably pleasant "state-change." Nearly any Feldenkrais lesson is likely to do this, but these lessons change your state though easy, simple, very comfortable movement patterns. We frequently suggest during all lessons that you, “Just do what’s easy,” or “Only do the movement while it remains comfortable.” For each Tuesday class, I’ll continue to do my best to bring you lessons that encourage you to explore at that easy level, yet still have the same power of transformation you find with all lessons.
While putting together lessons for this series over the past several months, I've been reminded over and over of how spot-on, "less is more," can really feel. Come explore these delicious movements that will accrue in a way that makes you happy to be a human!
Improving Balance
Continuing in November, I'll offer lessons that focus on the improvement of your entire nervous system through the particular lens of attaining better balance.
Balance lessons
Well, it’s Feldenkrais so you may find some surprising lessons that can help with balance!
Many people don’t realize how many balance issues are really issues of asymmetric use or holding patterns of the torso. We’ll do lessons that are focused on bringing greater awareness and ease of movement to the spine in all directions and to the ribs, as well.
Poor organization of the core muscles, especially the relationship of the abdominal wall to the back muscles behind the abdominal region can be a significant “sticking point” that can adversely affect balance so we’ll do lessons that reorganize the core for more efficient action.
Balance is affected by the organization and the ability of the nervous system to sense the feet and ankles so we’ll do some lessons that focus on improving your awareness of your feet and the use of your ankles.
We’ll do several lessons in standing over the course of the series as there are some aspects of improving balance that respond best to working with having to remain balanced while learning something new. Dr. Feldenkrais had many ingenious and unusual ideas on how to improve balance while standing. We’ll explore some of those.
I invite you to join me on Friday mornings over the next several months and explore balance in great detail. Because our ability to function successfully in the world is so dependent on our ability to move around on two legs, when balance improves our sense of our own capability improves and we cannot help but feel more competent, more secure and freer to do more of whatever we’d like to do. You’ll end up feeling great!
Free Fundamentals or
Feldenkrais / Mindfulness
Generally, on the last Saturday of the month, I teach a Feldenkrais fundamentals class. This class takes place just once per month and is offered free of charge. If you are new to the Feldenkrais Method, this is the class to try out.
Generally, on the first and third Saturdays of each month (but not always so check the calendar you'll find by clicking the green button below), I teach a special 90-minute Feldenkrais / Mindfulness class where we explore the synergies of mindfulness practice and the Feldenkrais Method.
In his article, "Learn to Learn," Dr. Feldenkrais offers instructions for how, and some of the reasoning behind why, we ask you to pay attention in very specific ways during ATM class.
